The United States Junior Amateur is open to male golfers who have not reached their 18th birthday prior to the close of competition and whose USGA Handicap Index does not exceed 6.4. The championship was first contested in 1948 and is considered to be the premiere junior competition.

Donald Hurter of Honolulu became the first person from Hawaii to capture the championship in 1978 at the Wilmington Country Club in Wilmington, Delaware.

Tiger Woods is the only player who has won the championship more than once. Tiger captured the title in 1991, 1992 and 1993. This is the only USGA event that Jack Nicklaus has been eligible to play in and did not win at least once. Jack qualified five times and his best finish was in 1956 when he made it to the semifinals.

The U.S. Junior Amateur is one of the most difficult of all of the USGA Championships to win because of two factors: the age limit and the large number of quality young players who enter the championship every year.

The 2017 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship will be July 17-22, at Flint Hills National Golf Club in Andover, Kan.
